It has been almost a year since I first met Scott and Nitsa of Sun Potion and was introduced to the magical world of tonic herbs and superfoods. As I have shared more about this incredible company, from a very special interview with Scott and Nitsa that can be read here, to a Sun Potion Instagram Takeover and many experiments + recipes dreamed up in the kitchen, one theme has remained. Everyone wants to learn more. So many of you have written, asking questions and ready to begin your journey. You want to understand what the tonic herbs and superfoods are, where they come and how you can incorporate them into your life.
I am over-the-moon excited to introduce today’s guide. In collaboration with Sun Potion we have put together a comprehensive look at all of the herbs Sun Potion shares, what they are, the benefits and how you can enjoy them in your life.
Whether you are just starting out, have questions or need a refresher, this guide is for you. I am infinitely thankful to both Scott and Nitsa for all they have taught me and can honestly say since incorporating these nourishing herbs and superfoods into my diet, I have reached new vibrations of feeling better than I ever have. There is no rush on your journey, these herbs are meant to be ingested over a lifetime. This isn’t a fad diet or a once-in-awhile remedy, once you start enjoying these medicinal plants, your mind and body will be forever thankful.
My goal has always been to inform you about the benefits of these wondrous plants and remove any intimidation or questions you may have. Let’s start off with exactly what a tonic herb is:
A dual – directional plant which is intended to be consumed in small, consistent amounts as a potent, nutrient-rich, medicinal food. These therapeutic plants help the body adapt to stressors, rise above common ailments, and generally help people to feel great!
What is the best way to ingest these herbs?
In small doses (½ – 1 tsp/ day) over a radiant and full lifetime.
Your favorite liquid base to blend your herbs with?
Raw milk – almond, macadamia, cashew, or cold pressed coconut.
What herb(s) would you recommend for someone just getting started?
The anandamide blend is a great start! It contains a full spectrum of the tonic herbs and superfoods (maca, cacao, tocos) and is designed to activate and harmonize the whole system. We love mixing a teaspoon in raw almond milk and blending it up in the vitamix so it is frothy and full of love– it is like an activated chocolate milk shake!!
Is there a limit to how many herbs you can mix together or certain herbs that shouldn’t be mixed together?
Generally we recommend adding ½ tsp of each herb to each single serving of 8-16 oz. of water.

What it is/where it is derived from: A traditional Japanese healing food consumed for beauty and longevity.
Benefits: It is a rich source of vitamin b12, skin and digestive tonic.

What it is/where it is derived from: An Ayurvedic antioxidant, also known as Indian ginseng, found in regions of India, northern Africa and the Middle East

What it is/where it is derived from: Known as the great protector from Yunnan Province, China
Benefits: skin health, immune support, metabolism and digestion, energy levels and whole body function

He Shou Wu
What it is/where it is derived from: He Shou Wu is a traditional Taoist herb and Jing tonic. It has been used for centuries in China
Benefits: tonify and nourish the hair, skin and nails, nervous system, sexual center, shen (spirit) and jing (primary essence/life force)
How to enjoy: 2 grams in warm water or tea
What it is/where it is derived from: a precursor to dopamine, grown in India
Benefits: Mucuna is known as the “velvet bean” and may enhance brain function, elevate mood and refine the senses, soothe the nervous system and support overall well being
How to enjoy: it is a great addition to teas, smoothies, raw treats and raw milk potions
Cordyceps (Mushroom Powder)
What it is/where it is derived from: Cordyceps is a fungus that often grows on insects backs, we cultivate and source it in the United States
Benefits: may support mental power, athletic endurance, sexual energy, muscle tone and immune support
How to enjoy: a ½ teaspoon, once or twice a day and tastes great in soups, teas, smoothies
Reishi (Mushroom Powder)
What it is/where it is derived from: Traditionally used in Oriental Eastern Folk Medicine to “nourish the heart and pacify the spirit”
